I am thrilled to be asked by the new Leader, Hon Bill Shorten MP, to serve as Shadow Minister for Vocational Education.
I previously served as Parliamentary Secretary and Minister for Higher Education and Skills in the Gillard Government and I am delighted to be able to continue to work in an area that I am extremely passionate about.
In 2008 I Chaired the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Education and Training and conducted the Inquiry into combining school and work: supporting successful youth transitions.
Prior to entering Parliament I worked in the education sector as a high school teacher and a TAFE teacher.
Vocational training and skills development are a key factor in participation and productivity in the economy and the growth of quality jobs for the future.
I look forward to working with Senator the Hon Kim Carr and the rest of the Shadow Ministry team.
I would also like to congratulate my local colleague, Stephen Jones, Member for Throsby on his appointment as Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Development and Infrastructure.
