Sharon Bird and Ryan Park today welcomed the Government’s decision to continue funding the Communities for Children program for another two years.
Local organisation, Big Fat Smile has operated playgroups across the region since 2008 under this program.
Late last year organisations were notified that they would no longer receive funding and services would have to close. In February, organisations were advised that funding would be extended until 30 June 2015.
“Unfortunately, the Abbott Government left local playgroups in limbo until the very last minute before granting them a two year reprieve,” Sharon Bird said today.
“The local community in Bellambi collected over 700 signatures on a petition and have run a great campaign to have the funding restored.
“My office has written and called Minister Scott Morrison’s office regularly urging them to restore this funding and it was great to receive the news yesterday that the funding had been restored.
“I congratulate the local community in Bellambi, through the Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre and Bellambi Public School, on the great campaign to continue the playgroup.
Ryan Park also paid tribute to the great work of local Bellambi residents.
“The local community here in Bellambi has really pulled together to help save the playgroup and Sharon and I would like to thank them for their hard work.
“It was great to go out there this morning to talk to the staff, volunteers, parents and the kids and see how excited they were to receive news of the continued funding. It is just a shame the Abbott Government kept them in limbo for so long.
