COVID-19 - Maternity Services

Labor values the essential role of midwives and understands the challenges faced at this time.

Please be assured that we are doing everything in our power to protect and support midwives and other health providers throughout the COVID-19 outbreak.

Labor also understands the strong evidence that care by a known midwife across pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period reduces complications and improves outcomes for mothers, babies and families.

For that reason, Labor would welcome and support any steps the Government takes to implement the MBS Review and the National Strategic Approach to Maternity Services. We’ll remain in close contact with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, the Australian College of Midwives and others on these issues.

Labor’s ongoing support for midwives is part of our long partnership with maternity services. The last Labor Government added midwives to the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme, ensuring that regulation is on par with other medical and health professionals. Labor also gave midwives access to a range of Medicare and PBS items for the first time.
