Cuts And Furphies: Minister Refuses To Back TAFE And Misleads About Funding

On Radio National this morning, Scott Ryan again refused to back TAFE or put forward any plan to ensure TAFE remains viable into the future. In response to a direct question on TAFE the Minister followed the pattern set by the three former Liberal Ministers by completely avoiding the question.

Worse, the Minister misled listeners by claiming that the Liberals had increased National Partnership Payments during their time in office.  The increases the Minister is trying to claim through the National Partnership Payments to the States were in fact fully costed and budgeted in Labor’s last budget.

“Under our National Partnership Payments we’ve increased, since we came to office, the payments to the states by 58 per cent”.

SENATOR SCOTT RYAN, ABC RADIO NATIONAL, 24 MARCH 2016

All the Liberals have achieved since they came to office is to cut $2.5 billion in funding for vocational education and skills.  It’s a bit rich for the Minister to claim that he is increasing payments to the States when the record of the Abbott/Turnbull Government has been to treat the portfolio like a piggy bank and make cuts to it at every budget and mid-year budget review since they were elected.

This is typical of this government – secret TAFE-destroying federal takeover plans, playing the blame game over massive blow-outs with VET FEE-HELP, cuts of $2.5 billion and misleading the public about funding.

It’s time the Minister took some responsibility and started being honest with the country about how he proposes to stop the freefall in apprenticeship numbers, the decimation of TAFE and actually start training our workforce for the jobs of the future.
