FIONA PHILLIPS ANNOUNCED AS LABOR CANDIDATE FOR GILMORE

Labor has today announced that its candidate for Gilmore at the next federal election will be Fiona Phillips.

Joining her in Kiama for the announcement today were local MPs, Member for Whitlam, Stephen Jones, and Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird.

Ms Phillips used today's announcement to outline her priorities for the region.

“We need to get back to delivering a fair go for everyone on the South Coast,” said Ms Phillips.

“Jobs, pensions, health and education are key issues in Gilmore, and will be my focus.”

“People are disappointed with the Liberals and want a local member who will stand up for the electorate in Canberra.”

“The people in Gilmore deserve someone who’s got the energy, the fight and integrity to stand up for the issues that matter.”

Stephen Jones said it was a sign of respect for the people in Gilmore, that Labor has endorsed Fiona this early. People will have plenty of time to see how hard she works and what she will do for the region.

“We don’t know when the next election will be, but Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals fell across the line in 2016,” said Mr Jones.

“In 2016, the Liberals scraped across the line by 730 votes making it one of the most marginal seats in the country.”

“Gilmore has been neglected by the Liberals for 21 years.”

Sharon Bird said Fiona has the life experience to really make a difference in the area.

“Fiona grew up on a dairy farm on the South Coast, and is now raising her family locally,” said Ms Bird.

“She worked in the defence industry for many years, she’s a TAFE teacher, and has done a fantastic job of taking up issues that matter to South Coast residents.”

“We know this seat is absolutely critical at the next election, and the electorate deserves someone with Fiona’s fight.”
