Member for Cunningham Sharon Bird is pleased to announce funding for four local community organisations to celebrate National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week.

NAIDOC_week.jpg“I am extremely pleased to announce community groups in Cunningham have received a total of $10,450 in funding through the Public Awareness Program towards their NAIDOC week celebrations,” Sharon Bird said.

“The Public Awareness Program provides funding to organisations to assist with activities that promote an understanding of, and respect for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture,” Ms Bird said.

Funding has been awarded to the following organisations:

• Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre - $3,000

• Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation - $3,500

• Wollongong City Council - $3,500

• Corrimal High School - $450

“NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to join together to recognise the valuable contribution Indigenous people have made to this country,” Ms Bird said.

“These community groups make a fantastic contribution to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and I encourage all local residents to take part in this year’s NAIDOC week activities,” Ms Bird said.

NAIDOC week will be celebrated from 6-13 July 2013.
