Local MPs call for re-think on Fairfax job cuts

Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird and Member for Throsby, Stephen Jones have today expressed their great dismay at the announcement by Fairfax Regional Media that editorial production positions at the Illawarra Mercury Wollongong Advertiser, Lake Times and Kiama Independent are to be shifted to New Zealand.

“This decision will impact badly on the ability of these Illawarra papers to provide a quality local newspaper,” Ms Bird said.

“Newspapers are not just the product of photographers’ or journalists – sub-editors are the heart of the newsroom, with vast institutional and organisational memories, and an intimate knowledge of their community,” Ms Bird said.

“The loss of production roles at our local newspapers means that young people from the Illawarra region will no longer have access to the important skills training, jobs and career paths that are entailed in these positions,” Mr Jones said.

“I call on Fairfax management to work constructively with its staff and their union the MEAA to examine whether these important jobs can be retained in the Illawarra,” Mr Jones said.
