Local Members Sharon Bird and Stephen Jones send their warmest greetings to more than 4,000 Muslims celebrating Eid al-Adha across the region this weekend and encourage the Illawarra community to come together and celebrate what makes the region great – our shared values of tolerance, social cohesion, mutual respect and multiculturalism.
Eid al-Adha is a significant annual Islamic observance for Muslim communities across Australia. It is also known as the Feast of Sacrifice or Festival of Sacrifice as it commemorates Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son to God.
Local Members, Stephen Jones and Sharon Bird would like to take the opportunity this year to recognise the extraordinary contribution that the Muslim community makes to our region.
“It is hard to imagine the shape of our country today without the valuable contributions that Islamic Australians have made”, they said.
“Stephen and I recently had the opportunity to join the Muslim community for a number of Iftar dinners to celebrate the breaking of a day of fasting through the month of Ramadan,” Sharon Bird said.
“We strongly believe that multiculturalism has transformed our region into a vibrant and prosperous place, and have many people from the local Muslim community have made an important contribution to this transformation,” Stephen Jones said.
Sharon Bird and Stephen Jones would like to extend their best wishes to everyone this weekend for a joyous and peaceful celebration.
