Local organisation to help Australia get ready for NDIS

Local organisations, Illawarra Disability Trust and South Coast Home Modifications and Maintenance, will jointly receive $248,615 in funding from the Gillard Government to help Australia’s disability care and support system get ready for the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. This is a timely announcement as today is International Day of People with Disability.

Ms Bird today announced that both organisations will receive the funding as part of the Gillard Government’s $10 million Practical Design Fund, which identifies and supports innovative projects that will help people with disability, their families and carers and the disability sector transition to an NDIS.

“A National Disability Insurance Scheme will fundamentally change the way we deliver care and support for people with disability in our local area and across the country,” Ms Bird said.

“An essential part of getting this change right is developing practical, real-world ways to make sure an NDIS can work how it’s supposed to for people with disability.”

Illawarra Disability Trust will receive funding to develop an online forum for people with disability; families and carers to manage their network, share information and support each other.

South Coast Home Modifications and Maintenance will develop resources to help people with disability to make informed decisions about the costs and benefits of home modifications and accommodation choices.

Stephen Jones said the first stage of the National Disability Insurance Scheme will start from the middle of next year, delivering individualised care and support for thousands of people with disability, their families and carers in five trial locations around the country.

“It is terrific that we are making the NDIS a reality by investing $1 billion for the launch of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, and we’re working to introduce the first stage of the National scheme.

“With the start National Disability Insurance Scheme just around the corner, it’s really important that we’re doing all we can to help our disability sector identify the very best ways of supporting people with disability.

“To be chosen to deliver this national project is a fantastic achievement and it shows us that some of the best work being delivered by Australia’s disability sector is happening right here in our local areas.

“The work that both organisations is doing with the support of the Gillard Government will help make sure the National Disability Insurance Scheme becomes a reality for people with disability, their families and carers.
