Outstanding Result For Local Young Tradies At Worldskills In Brazil

Sharon Bird today congratulated local competitors from TAFE NSW Illawarra Institute at the WorldSkills Competition in Brazil following their outstanding achievements at the competition.

Local bricklayer, Sam Spong, was awarded a bronze medal and Medallions of Excellence were award to John Reminis (Bakery), Kallon McVicar (Welding) and Nicholas Roman (Joinery).

The Australian team received three silver and two bronze medals and 10 Skillaroos received Medallions of Excellence for receiving an overall score of 500 or more.

“This just shows that our local skilled tradespeople are amongst the best of the best in the world.  The Aussie team of 26 Skillaroos were in competition with tradespeople from 62 other countries and to receive this high level of recognition is a great achievement,” Sharon Bird said.

“I have recently met Kallon and have previously met John and was impressed by their passion and drive in their chosen trades.  I know that they both spend hours training and this dedication has been recognised.

“I congratulate the local team on their efforts – they have done the Illawarra proud.
