Labor appreciates the bravery and commitment of the civilian maritime workers and operators who provided rescue and relief services during the recent bushfire emergency.
Senator Carol Brown wrote to the Prime Minister on behalf of the Labor Party on 30 January 2020 seeking to work with the Government to develop a non-partisan position on the development of a civilian maritime response capacity.
The potential purchase of the Aurora Australis for use as a civilian emergency response and training vessel was included in the options Senator Brown canvassed in her letter to the Prime Minister.
Sadly the Government has not shown Labor the courtesy of responding.
Labor remains keen to work with the Government and we would welcome an opportunity to meet with them and discuss the various options available.
