Local Illawarra Business Chamber reports today that two out of five Illawarra businesses are experiencing a skills shortage should not come as any shock following massive cuts to TAFE, skills and vocational education since the election of the Abbott-Turnbull-Morrison Liberal Governments.
The Liberals promised 80,000 new apprentices but the real facts are that Australia has lost over 150,000 apprentices and trainees since the Liberals came to power in 2013.
Sharon Bird said the Liberals have made savage cuts to apprenticeship programs and all but gutted TAFE funding. This means that our young people and people seeking to retrain to re-enter the workforce are missing out on getting the skills they need to get a job.
“There is absolutely no surprise that businesses are copping the brunt of the Liberals failure to fund vocational education properly.
Under the Federal Liberals, the VET system has been damaged by funding cuts, privatisation, excessive competition policy and poor regulation.
- $3 billion in cuts to vocational education and apprentice support programs
- 150,000 fewer apprentices across Australia
- TAFE enrolments plummeting, courses cut, teachers sacked and campuses closed.
In New South Wales, the combination of Federal and State Liberal governments has seen TAFEs close, courses cancelled, the cost of courses sky-rocket, teachers sacked and TAFE campuses, like Dapto TAFE, close.
