Federal Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird today congratulated Sandon Point Surf Life Saving Club on receiving the National Rescue of the Month (September) Award from Surf Life Saving Australia.
The Award is presented at meetings of the Parliamentary Friends of Surf Life Saving at Parliament House regularly throughout the year.
“Stephen Jones and I were pleased to join with members of the Club at the presentation of the National Rescue of the Month Award for September,” Sharon Bird said.
“Our life savers play a vital role in keeping our community safe in the water over the summer months.
“Today’s award demonstrates the high level of skill and commitment that they bring to this task and I thank them for giving up their own time with their family to ensure that people taking advantage of our fabulous beaches are safe.
The Lifesavers involved in the rescue were Sue Martin, Christian Szanto, Rod Johnston, Jason Hinds and Keith Miller.
One Sunday, 21 September 2014, a local surfer competing in a junior board riding competition fell heavily in the shallow reef.
Sandon Point SLSC members Jason Hinds and Christian Szanto swan across to assist the surfer. Jason stabilised the surfer’s head while Christian assisted to keep the patient afloat.
Fellow member Rod Johnston assisted as the surfer was secured on his board and brought back to shore. Off duty Lifeguard Keith Miller placed a neck collar on the patient as Patrol Captain Sue Martin took over patient first aid.
Paramedics directed the patrol members to move the patient onto a spinal board and be placed into a basket stretcher to be transported to the top of the headland into the Ambulance.
