Sharon Bird today backed in Shadow Trade Minister, Jason Clare’s, call for Malcolm Turnbull to stand up for Australian steel when he meets with Donald Trump at the G20 this week.
“Donald Trump is considering putting a tariff on steel imports to the United States –we need a Prime Minister who is prepared to stand up for steel and make sure that Australian steel is exempt from any Trump tariff,” Sharon Bird said.
“A Trump tariff could potentially put the 400,000 tonnes that BlueScope Port Kembla exports to the US under threat.
“Our local steel workers need Malcolm Turnbull to have the backbone to stand up for their jobs.
“Even though Malcolm Turnbull can’t stand up to his predecessor or his party room, I hope he can at least stand up for our local jobs.
