Statement on New Ministry

Today I will be sworn in as Minister for Regional Development, Regional Communications, and Road Safety.

As a representative for the great region of the Illawarra, I am very passionate about Australia’s regional development, and I look forward to working with local communities across Australia.

This Labor Government has a strong record supporting regional communities to develop to their full potential.

The National Broadband Network is likely to have its greatest impact in regional areas.

This Government is making record investments in rural and regional infrastructure.

Investments in schools and higher education have boosted the prospects of students from rural and regional areas.

I will bring my experience both as Minister for Higher Education and Skills, and former Chair of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Infrastructure and Communication to the portfolio.

I have been proud to serve as Minister for Higher Education and Skills. Education remains the great enabler for Australians everywhere, and I am very proud of our achievements in this area.

I would like to acknowledge the vocational education and training, and university sectors for their engagement and tireless advocacy.

Lastly, I would like to thank the very fine public servants in the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science and Tertiary Education for their advice during my time as Minister and Parliamentary Secretary.
