Federal Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird, today expressed her sadness at the passing of a local Labor legend, Dave Hamilton.
“I did a term working with Dave on Shellharbour Council in the 1990’s and formed a close friendship with him. In those days we often were on opposite sides of a party debate but I always found Dave to be firmly committed to Labor principles and the good of his beloved community. We might have disagreed on a policy but I never doubted where his heart was,” Ms Bird said.
“I also had the great privilege to develop a friendship with Dave’s family, particularly his wife Moira, but also his extended family and children. That’s how it was with Dave, everyone became an extension of his family. This included his local suburb of Oak Flats and the broader Shellharbour LGA.”
Ms Bird said she recognised there would be many in the Labor Party, the union movement and the local community saddened by today’s news.
“Many organisations and individuals will miss Dave’s energy, commitment and sense of humour in the future. We can only be grateful to have enjoyed them as a part of our lives,” she said.
Ms Bird passed on her condolences to Moira; Dave’s children, their partners and children; and his extended family.
