Federal Member for Cunningham Sharon Bird, and State Member for Keira Ryan Park, today expressed their great sadness at the passing of former Deputy Lord Mayor, Ian Hunt. Mr Hunt died last night after a short and courageous battle with cancer.
Mr Hunt served as a Councillor for the Northern Suburbs of the Illawarra from 1995-2004, including two years as the Deputy Lord Mayor of Wollongong City Council from 2002-2004.
“Ian will be forever remembered as someone who was passionate about improving our local community. He spent time serving on the Wollongong Showground Trust, Conservatorium of Music and was instrumental in the redevelopment of the North Dalton Park sporting precinct. He was particularly proud of the contribution he made while serving as Deputy Lord Mayor.” Mr Park said.
“Ian supported me greatly over the last four years, he was my State Electoral Council President and he represented me on the Wollongong Traffic Committee, both roles I know he enjoyed immensely.” he said.
“His great loves were the Labor Party, his family and the local community he lived in and we are deeply saddened by his passing and offer his family and friends our sincere thought at this very difficult time.” Mr Park said.
“Ian was a dedicated and hardworking member of the Party. He was very committed to the Balgownie Branch and he and his wife, Judy, have been long term stalwarts,” Sharon Bird said.
“On a personal level I’ve known Ian and his family for many years. It is a joy to see how close and loving they are. I’m sure they’ll find comfort from each other. We will all miss Ian.” Ms Bird said.
Mr Hunt was survived by his beloved wife Judy, his three children Leighanne, Jenelle and Brad, their partners and four beautiful grandchildren.
