$1.7 million available for local council projects

Federal Member for Cunningham Sharon Bird and Federal Member for Throsby Stephen Jones today welcomed the allocation of over $1.7 million in Federal funds to Wollongong and Shellharbour City councils in Round 5 of the Australian Government’s Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF).

RDA_Fund.jpg“This additional funding is vitally important to help local infrastructure projects keep up with our growing region”, said Ms Bird

“This RDAF funding can be used to build and renew community services like sporting venues, libraries, town halls, playgrounds and essential community services such as child care facilities.”

“It will also go towards shovel-ready projects, allowing our local councils to create new jobs, while delivering much needed infrastructure now and for the future”, said Jones.

“The result of previous RDAF rounds has been extremely beneficial for the region.”

“We’ve already seen the successful funding of great local projects like the Wollongong City Mall upgrade and development of the Community Hub and Youth Foyer at Warilla, which has already helped get 15 disadvantaged youths into work.”

“We’re encouraging local mayors, councillors and sports and community groups to take advantage of the latest round of funding and submit their ideas to RDAF to help our region become a vibrant place to live, work and play” said Ms Bird.

The new funding announced by the Federal Government this week comes on top of the $2 billion provided annually to local government through Financial Assistance Grants, the $350 million annually for local roads through the Roads to Recovery program and the $1 billion provided since 2007 for community infrastructure projects through the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

RDAF Round 5 applications open tomorrow 21 June and close at 5pm (AEST) on 22 July 2013. Guidelines for this funding round are on the Department of Regional Australia website www.regional.gov.au.
