Coalition must come clean in budget reply

16 May 2013

Local MP’s are calling on Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey to come clean about any planned cuts affecting our region in the Opposition’s formal budget reply today.

Member for Cunningham Sharon Bird and Member for Throsby Stephen Jones are challenging the Coalition to fully detail their plans for the people of the Illawarra and Southern Highlands.

“Tony Abbott has already made clear he has a number of cuts planned that will hurt local workers and families in the Illawarra” Ms Bird said.

“So far, these flagged cuts have included the school kids bonus, which has benefited more than 16,000 families in the Illawarra, the household assistance payments and the National Broadband Network” she said.

“Another failure by Tony Abbott to reveal his plans tonight will confirm that he thinks he can cruise to the election by keeping Australians in the dark,” Mr Jones said.

“The Liberal State Government’s have already proven they’re not afraid to cut to the bone on some of our most crucial services like education and health.”

“As a regional area, these services greatly improve the lives of local families and residents of the Illawarra and the Opposition’s planned cuts would significantly impact our day to day lives” Ms Bird said.

“Tony Abbott needs to stop taking the people of the Illawarra and Southern Highlands for granted and assure us he won’t slash essential help for those struggling in our community” said Jones.

“Gimmicks and slogans are not good enough from a man wanting to be Australia’s next Prime Minister.”

“The Labor Government has been absolutely clear about our future investment and spending plans with major reforms like fairer school funding, DisabilityCare and the National Broadband Network”, Ms Bird said.

“Now we’re calling on Tony Abbott and the Opposition to do the same.”
