Community kitchen garden funding for healthy kids

IMG_0364.JPGSharon Bird today met with the P&C and visited Mt St Thomas Public School to announce funding of $19,591 under Round 2 of the Stronger Communities Programme (SCP) for the Mount St Thomas Community Kitchen Garden project.

Mt St Thomas Public School’s Community Gardening Group has been operating at the school since 2008.

A dedicated group of volunteers including past and present teachers, students and other local community members meet weekly.  The Group has won many state and national awards.

The project aims to improve existing infrastructure and consolidate existing resources to establish a Community Kitchen Garden.

The Group plans to refurbish existing benches, install raised garden beds, an outdoor kitchen and pizza oven, rainwater tank, irrigation and communal seating.

The Group’s aim is to educate the community on the benefits of community gardening and linking this to improving people’s diets and physical activity levels through access to fresh food and regular gardening activities.

Sharon Bird said this was a fun way for children to learn the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

“The Community Gardening Group has been in place for many years.  With the involvement of parents, teachers and students and this matched funding the Group will now be able to teach children how to prepare and share nutritious food,” Sharon Bird said.

“It is great to see the community working together on a fun and educational project to encourage children to engage in a healthy lifestyle.
