Cuts To Apprentices Continue To Bite

Latest figures from the National Centre for Vocational Education and Research (NCVER) show that two years of Abbott and Turnbull cuts have had a devastating effect on apprentices in training on and completions.

After two years and $1 billion in cuts to funding for apprentices, the number of completions has dropped from 63,000 in June 2013 to just 29,700 in June 2015.

There are almost 100,000 less apprentices in training, with numbers dropping from 407,000 in June 2013 to 308,000 in June 2015.

The Liberals never talk about supporting apprentices – their two years of cuts have had a devastating impact on both the number of apprentices in training and on apprentices completing their training:

  • $1 billion in cuts to apprenticeship programs such as mentoring, access and the Apprentice to Business Owner program  in the 2014-15 Budget;

  • Replaced apprentice support with apprentice debt by abolishing the Tools for Your Trade Program;

  • Rebadged and cut funding to Australian Apprenticeship Centres;

  • Abolished the Joint Group Training program;

  • Cutting support for adult apprentices; and

It is vital that we invest in ensuring that young people have the skills they need for the jobs of the future.

They have not had one new idea for training people for the jobs of the future.

The Liberals have wasted billions of dollars through their refusal to turn off the tap on rorts to VET FEE-HELP, yet they have axed programs that help apprentices to start and complete an apprenticeship.

The Liberals promised before the election that they would support apprentices.  The Minister needs to explain what they are doing to stop the dramatic decline in apprentice in training and completions.
