This week marks National Volunteer Week and 16 local community groups in Cunningham will receive $62,540 in funding to support local volunteers.
The Volunteer Grants program is a $9 million program to support local volunteers across Australia.
The grants awarded are between $1,000 and $5,000 and will enable local organisations to better support their volunteers to purchase small equipment, pay fuel, transport and training costs.
Sharon Bird said that many local community groups had been doing it very tough through the bushfires over summer and more recently with COVID-19 restrictions.
“Community groups have faced a lot of pressure recently with some organisations at the frontline of providing services to people in need while many organisations such as sporting groups have had their volunteer activities, including fundraising activities, suspended.
This funding will help local organisations to support their volunteers as they continue or recommence their important work in our community.
Volunteers are an integral part of our society, especially during difficult times. Their contribution is vital to ensuring that we continue to support families, provide employment pathways for young people and strengthen community resilience.
National Volunteer Week runs from 18-24 May and is run by Volunteering Australia. You can get involved in the online activities by visiting the Volunteering Australia www.volunteeringaustralia.org/update-on-national-volunteer-week-2020/#/.
