Send Tony Abbott A Message: Don't Pocket Our Pension

Local Federal MPs, Sharon Bird and Stephen Jones, today encouraged pensioners from the Illawarra to send a clear message to Tony Abbott: Don’t Pocket Our Pension.

Tony Abbott’s proposed changes to the indexation of the pension will leave almost 40,000 pensioners in Cunningham and Throsby up to $80 a week worse off within ten years, according to the Australian Council of Social Services.

Recent research shows that if Tony Abbott gets his way, the pension will drop from 28 per cent of average weekly earnings today to just 16 per cent by 2055.

“Pensioners in the Illawarra are already doing it tough.  Tony Abbott promised pensioners that there would be no cuts to their pension and now he is breaking this promise,” Sharon Bird said.

“We don’t want local pensioners pushed into poverty.  The Abbott Government is already trying to impose new taxes on medicine, fuel and visits to the doctor.  The last thing that pensioners need is a cut to their pension.

"No cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST and no cuts to the ABC or SBS."

“This is another lie from Tony Abbott.  On 6 September 2013 he promised there would be no change to pensions and he is now trying to implement changes that will see our local pensioners up to $80 a week worse off,” Stephen Jones said.

“Tony Abbott’s proposed changes risk creating a permanent underclass of pensioners here in the Illawarra.  He also plans to increase the Age pension to 70.  When workers do finally retire at the age of 70, they will be struggling to make ends meet.

Labor has launched the “Don’t Pocket Our Pension” campaign to send a strong message that we will stand side-by-side with pensioners by opposing Tony Abbott’s cuts to the Pension.
